Sustainability certificates.

The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certifies a significant portion of New Zealand’s wild-caught seafood as sustainable, including Hake, Hoki, Ling, Orange Roughy, Southern Blue Whiting, Albacore Tuna, Skipjack Tuna, and Ross Sea Toothfish.

Keep an eye out for the blue MSC tick on packaging.

Shopping guide.

You can gauge a seafood product’s sustainability by looking for three things.

  1. The country of origin can tell you if the fish population it comes from is appropriately managed.

  2. A certification label tells you if a team of scientists and experts has assessed the product’s origin and examined its supply chain.

  3. Your preferred grocery store chain is likely to have a seafood sourcing policy. This guide will help you locate and assess it.

New Zealand’s fisheries are some of the healthiest when measuring research, management, enforcement, socioeconomics, and shock status. By purchasing New Zealand seafood, you are making the best environmental choice.

Countdown and New World have published comprehensive sustainable fishing policies on their websites. Smaller retailers may not have specific sourcing policies listed, but it doesn’t mean they don’t follow sustainability standards. If you’re unsure, it’s best to enquire about their standards directly.

When evaluating a seafood sourcing policy, look for answers to these questions:

·         Which products does this policy cover?

·         How does this company define “environmental sustainability?”

·         How are companies verifying sustainability claims?

·         Is the company making progress, or is it static in its sourcing goals?

·         Do they address social responsibility?

When shopping for seafood, it is best to do your research. By confirming that the products are from New Zealand or identifying the appropriate environmental sustainability rating or certification, you can actively support well-managed fisheries. In cases where the information is not readily available, don’t hesitate to seek guidance from the retailer.
